About Me

Background:

My name, as you may or may not be aware, is Hughie Hanily. I’m from Sandringham, Victoria, Australia and am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts (Music Industry). I’ve always had a facination with music, first learning drums when I was 10, and continuing from there. Nowadays it seems to have completely taken over my life, which I am certainly not saddened by.

I spent primary school at Black Rock Primary where I learnt to play the wonderful instrument that is the recorder, as did my fellow classmates. I took music every year throughout middle school at St Leonard’s College, Brighton, and was chosen as good enough to be able to learn and play the bass guitar! Yes this was an honour, but caused problems as I was left handed, so I would go through my first couple of years playing an upside down bass guitar! By high school I’d chosen the guitar as my main instrument, having had guitar lessons for 7 years or so, and got the second highest score in my district for music solo performance in year 12. Since then I’ve started the B.A. (Music Industry) course at RMIT, am currently performing in 3 bands, and writing music.

Interests and Influences

What else do I do in my spare time? Sometimes I go skating, sometimes surfing, sometimes watch a movie or two or I might play a game of squash, but looking around my room its hard to find specific interests I have other than music. In terms of musical interests and influences there are many! To name a few:

Angus & Julia Stone, Art Blakey, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Beethoven, Big D and the Kids Table, Brian Eno, The Cat Empire, Catch 22, Dave Brubeck, Debussy, Decoder Ring, The Devil Wears Prada, Django Reinhardt, Doors, Experiences, Friends, George Benson, Immortal, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Judas priest, Led Zeppelin, The Living End, Mark Knofler, Michael Andrews, Nirvana, Not Kings of Leon, Pat Martino, Paul Gilbert, The Pink Floyd Experience, Pink Floyd, Placebo, The Polyphonic spree, Queen, Queens of the Stone age, Rage Against the Machine, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Silverchair, System of a Down, Tool, Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen and about 859 others.

In terms of musical styles… I can’t label myself as one, and I tend to go through phases of one particular genre. I have times where I listen to extremely heavy black metal, and other times where I listen to classical music, and only classical music. I always love jazz though, whatever mood I’m in.

I’m not sure what the future holds for me. I have interests in almost all areas of music, but one thing I’ve particularly enjoyed doing this year, and have thought about is composing music, and doing sound for film. This is an area I could explore in the future, or I could end up mixing albums in a room full of mixers and weird boxes with buttons on them. Who knows. Whatever it is I’ll still be playing a whole bunch of different instruments and performing I’m sure as nothing is as enjoyable as doing so and pleasing a crowd of people.
