Last days!

Hey all. So tomorrow is the due date :O. Kinda scary. I have five very successful remixes done which I’m super happy with. They all sound quite nice and are mixed not too badly if I may say so myself. Just putting the final touches on the site now, and putting all the pictures together.

The five styles from the past weeks have been, in order:

Acousitc, Reggae, Punk Rock, Country, and piano.

The artists i’ve covered have been:

Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Lady Antebellum, and Train. But not in that order. You’ll just have to guess for now which genre i’ve matched with which artist.

New formats and Ideas

So finally my site is getting a bit of structure and some nice ideas going. I’ve decided to make the site more of a “how to” in regards to mixing songs in certain styles. This gives a bit more interaction, and I will also, hopefully, integrate the option of uploads for people who have taken the advice on board and used it themselves to create their own mixes of songs. Each page then can be specified to a certain genre, and have media relating to such with examples and other peoples posts all connected.

Possible Titles include:

Hughie’s Mixtape

Hughie’s Pop Mashup Machine

How to Destroy/Improve Pop music

More to come!

Delicious – Creative uses and advanced applications for a social bookmarking website

The Website “Delicious” allows users to post, update, and collaborate bookmarks for various websites. The basic uses for this are obvious; Keeping track of websites found in the past, and keeping them in order, and also viewing other friends and similar minded peoples bookmarks. The site however has potential to be used in more advanced, creative ways. Some of these include:

- Marketing – data collection and information on a product

- Wish lists – Save certain products or items you have found which you might want to save up for or think about for the future

- RSS feeds from a favoured user

- Develop ideas – eg. Going on a trip and collaborating all location and attraction ideas and websites found into an exclusive tag

- Easy and cheap way to find solutions to problems already faced by other people

- Marketing a website – Post the website’s URL in relevant tags so that people will go to it

The Interview Project

I took a liking to David Lynch’s “Interview Project” as it is a unique and simple way of presenting and contrasting information that has been gathered from such a large field. It captures me due to its simplicity and ease of access into the lives of such contrasting, and interesting people from all over America. For me, it really gives an interesting perspective on the value of life and the overwhelming population of the world, and makes you consider the value of your own life, and what your place in it really means. This site works due to the ease of access to the material provided. There are no links to different pages with excessive information; it is just raw, solid interviews which give us raw, solid perspectives into other peoples lives, which we would never have even considered without.

Progress. Yes. I started easy and made an acoustic version of Ke$ha’s “Bla bla bla”. I changed the rhythm and turned the single notes used into 7th chords so it sounds more interesting. I obviously didn’t try to capture the essence of the song, as the essence of the song is, well, terrible, and I also kept it in context of Ke$ha’s perspective, thus not changing “his” to “her”. I think if i go through with this I will just leave it as it is, unless its quite easy to change; this one is not.

New Idea!

So… 15 minutes later or something I have an idea! It has pros and cons.. but doesn’t everything?

My idea is taking songs, or maybe one song a week from the top 10 list and remixing it into a new style. This gives the audience a good reason to come back, it’s fun for me, and I can have fun making people listen to well known songs in completely new contexts!

Those are the pros.

This would be rather easy if I had the access to recording facilities to do this with. Seeing as i can’t spend $10,000 to upgrade my single microphone and input socket into a fully functioning studio, I could potentially use the one at RMIT… if they actually go ahead and make it like they said they would. Who knows. I could use the computer to create some tracks digitally too. Perhaps get some guest singers in to do some vocals on tracks. Maybe not have them amazingly well done.. as this takes time. A lot of time. But something decent to listen to.

Well I have tried and tried to come up with a ground-breaking idea for my assignment but nothing has sprung to mind as of yet. I’m sure that very soon however the idea that will take over my life for a semester, and perhaps maybe a lot longer, will come out and be so original and amazing that all the world’s occupants will be swimming through it every day, clinging to my every word as they wait for the latest update. Well… We’ll see. Don’t want to be too optimistic

Design Properties in Michael Wolf and Alex the Sloth’s work

I found that a lot of Alex Soth’s work was quite geometrically focused. There is apparent emphasis on shapes and the relationship between shapes in the photos that I browsed through. There is also evidence of use of the rule of thirds, with focus objects occasionally being on the far right or far left. One thing that he does very well is the use of certain coloring, and matched colors which evokes emotion. It is occasionally the contrast between certain colors, or just the subtle difference which becomes the most powerful and emotive part of the photo. Proportion is also used well with some photos isolating an object and giving a certain feeling such as lonelines using distance and perspective.

Michael Wolf’s work seems to be less property focus, and more focused on the content of the image. He does have albums of photos which are obviously focussed on the design properties such as shapes and colous, however these properties then become the photo’s content in his work.
